October Book Treasures in My Closet

I don't know if I ever mentioned why I discuss book treasures in my closet the month before release, rather than in the current month, knowing I'll still have books coming in for review.  It's a librarian issue.  I've always tried to notify my patrons as soon as the books are available in the computer system for placing reserves.  I know patrons have favorite authors, and they would like to know about their forthcoming books as soon as possible.  So, I discuss book releases a month before actual release as an aid to library patrons.

I have a dozen books with October release dates in my closet right now, although I'm sure there will be more coming.  Mark these down, if you see a favorite.

In Tasha Alexander's latest novel, Dangerous to Know, Lady Emily discovers the body of a woman with wounds identical to those inflicted on the victims of Jack the Ripper, but her investigation leads her to question her own sanity.

Alison Bruce brings back Detective Constable Gary Goodhew in The Siren, as he sifts through the lives of two women.   Rachel Golinski's house burned to the ground, and Kimberly Guyver's son is missing.  It seems their checkered past is catching up with them.

Laura Childs' Fiber & Brimstone could be the perfect Halloween mystery.  It's time for the gala Halloween Monsters and Mayhem Torchlight Parade in New Orleans' French Quarter.  When two people are murdered who had unfriendly relationships with a friend of Carmela Bertrand, the scrapbooking sleuth decides it's time to unmask a killer.

If Christmas in October is good enough for the stores, I guess it's good enough for a book, especially a book that looks as appealing as Christmas at The Mysterious Bookshop, edited by Otto Penzler.   Over the years, Penzler commissioned an original story, one that had to be set during the Christmas season, and some of the action had to take place in The Mysterious Bookshop in New York City.  Now, those stories, by authors such as Donald E. Westlake, S.J. Rozan, Mary Higgins Clark, and Ed McBain, are gathered in one volume.  (Buy it now, and read it yourself, before giving it as the perfect Christmas gift for a mystery reader.)

Rogue Island by Brian DiSilva is the author's thriller debut.  Liam Mulligan, is an old school newspaper man whose beat is Providence, Rhode Island.  Someone is burning down Mulligan's old neighborhood, and people he loves are dying.  With the public on the verge of panic, Mulligan searches for the truth.

Faye Longchamp has a brand new PhD, and a fairly new husband, Joe Wolf Mantooth.  And, their archaeological consulting firm's first big project takes them to St. Augustine, Florida, and an elegant historic home.  A disappearance and a murder seemed tied to missing artifacts, so it doesn't take long for the police to turn to an expert for help, Faye.  Mary Anna Evans' Strangers will take Faye and Joe deep into the secrets of historic St. Augustine.

The second book to feature a historic mansion this month is Jeanne Glidewell, The Extinguished Guest.  In the second Lexie Starr mystery, Lexie and a friend open a bed & breakfast.  But, on the inn's opening night, the new president of the local historical society is murdered, and too many of the guests seem to have a reason to want him dead.

Robert Greer's First of State is a prequel to his CJ Floyd mystery series. The story starts in 1972, when CJ has just returned to Denver from Vietnam, suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder.  When a new friend is murdered, CJ's world threatens to collapse.  It's only five years later, working for his uncle as a bail bondsman and bounty hunter, that a clue surfaces, and CJ returns to investigate his very first case.

Former magazine and newspaper publisher Richard Hine offers his debut novel, Russell Wiley is Out to Lunch, a look at the turmoil inside a newspaper executive's office as the old media gives way to the new - and life as he has known it changes completely.

Velocity is the latest Karen Vail thriller from bestselling author Alan Jacobson.  FBI profiler Karen Vail deals with a case that's personal when Detective Robby Hernandez, her boyfriend, disappears in Napa Valley.  There are no clues, other than a blood stain, and a loose connection to vicious serial killer operating in the wine country, a killer who challenges Vail by leaving his victims in public places.  It's a chase that takes Vail from Washington, D.C. to San Diego and Las Vegas, in a search for the shocking truth.

Forensic sculptor Eve Duncan returns in Iris Johansen's Chasing the Night.   When a CIA agent asks Eve to re-create her son's face, as he would look nine years after his disappearance, it could put everyone the agent loves in danger.  And, Eve could also be in the path of evil.

In Collusion, the sequel to Stuart Neville's award-winning The Ghosts of Belfast, Detective Inspector Jack Lennon tries to track down his former lover and their daughter, although his superiors tell him to back off.  Lennon may be forced to join forces with a killer to find his family before they're caught up in a conspiracy.

If you haven't seen an October book you were expecting here, check back tomorrow, when I cover the hot titles scheduled for release that month.  These are only the treasures that are already in my closet.
