This week, the Carolinas are the scene of the crime. First, Joyce and Jim Lavene took us to Duck, North Carolina in A Touch of Gold. Later this week, Ellery Adams will return readers to North Carolina in A Deadly Cliché. Today, Paige Shelton takes us to South Carolina in her second Farmers' Market mystery, Fruit of All Evil. Are the Carolinas really as deadly as they appear?
Becca Robins helped solve one case, but she's actually happiest either in her garden or working at the Farmers' Market where she sells her jams and preserves. And, her own two marriages were short-lived, so she isn't comfortable making arrangements for her friend's wedding. Fortunately, Linda wants a wedding in just five days since the husband-to-be is a Navy Seal who has been called up. And, she wants that wedding at Bailey's Farmers' Market. Since Becca's sister, Allison is the manager of Bailey's, and so many friends are willing to pitch in with flowers and pastries and music, Becca thinks she can handle anything that comes up. She just didn't expect the groom's mother to be killed.
Madeline Forsyth was a formidable figure in town, president of Central Savings and Loan. Since the bank was foreclosing on some of the local farms, she wasn't very popular lately. But, Becca didn't think any of her friends killed her. As the person in charge of the wedding, Becca was determined to see that Linda had a chance to marry her Navy Seal, Drew, before he left. If she had to endanger herself and solve the case in order to save the wedding, so be it.
Paige Shelton is another author who presents readers with a unique setting and interesting characters. Although some of the characters only have small roles, Shelton describes them in enough detail to bring them to life. I have a problem with some of Becca's actions, but even Becca knows she behaves irresponsibly at times. When she decides to walk on a ledge, she admits, "At that point, my common sense flew right out the window." But, she shows enough common sense to work with the local police chief. I like Becca, her boyfriend, her sister, and so many of the characters in this book.
Shelton also has a knack for humor. Becca has a fun scene with a calf, but the highlight of the book is a scene with Becca, two cops, and a cat. You can enjoy Paige Shelton's Farmers' Market mysteries for the stories, the characters, the humor. Fruit of All Evil beautifully blends all of those elements in a delightful mystery.

Backstage Stuff by Sharon Fiffer

Jane's been down in the dumps, unable to sleep or move on with her life, after her husband asked for a divorce. However, her best friend, Tim, knows all the right buttons to push to force her to move on. He offers her work assisting him with an estate sale; it's in their hometown; and he brought her a seventy-year-old mystery to solve.
Tim is to sell all the contents of the Kendell mansion. Freddy Kendell, grandfather of the current heirs to the family fortune, was also a playwright. And, Tim has permission to stage one of his melodramas. Jane can't believe it when he doesn't ask her to star in it, since she was a theater major. Instead, Jane's mother, Nellie, has a featured role as a woman in a coma, onstage for much of the play. But, Freddy's play has brought nothing but bad luck in the past, and it looks like that's continuing. And, Tim's not the only one who finds confusing messages from "Old Bumby." The messages say things like, "People foolish enough to put on this play will die - And they will die fools. Listen to Old Bumby on this!"
Tim found the perfect projects to force Jane back into life. The Kendell mansion is filled with interesting pieces. Jane has to bring Tim up to speed as a director, and gather the props for the play. Then, there's the mystery that connects the play and Jane's mother. Nellie has secrets that relate to Bumby, Freddy Kendell, and, possibly even a murder that threatens the play.
Fiffer's mysteries are always most successful when Jane and Tim return to Kankakee. Jane's relationship with her parents is as much a mystery as Jane's involvement in murder investigations. This time, Backstage Stuff is a satisfying mix of family, suspense, and theater. In bringing closure to one stage of Jane Wheel's life, it opens up wonderful possibilities for the continuing series. Backstage Stuff is more than the seventh book in this series. It's the kick-off to a whole new stage in the life of the books.

Buffalo West Wing by Julie Hyzy

There's a new family in the White House, and it's going to take some work for Ollie and her staff to adjust to a young family with two children. Ollie's prepared, with kid-friendly menus, but things go wrong, beginning on Inauguration Day, and they only get worse. Someone left a box of chicken wings for Abigail and Josh, the President's children, but with no knowledge as to where they came from, Ollie steps up, and refuses to allow the children to have their favorite food. No one is happy with Ollie - the children, their mother, or Ollie's arch-enemy, Peter Everett Sargeant, the Sensitivity Director. When the chicken turns out to have been poisoned, Ollie knows she prevented a tragedy, but the Secret Service keeps it a secret. So, it's even more disturbing when the First Lady brings the family's personal chef to the White House to cook for them. Are Ollie's days numbered as the White House chef?
Every White House chef mystery is cause for celebration. The daily schedule in the White House kitchen is trauma enough, but Hyzy always ratchets up the tension with plots and danger. Ollie is a wonderful character, revealed a little more in each book. The characters, particularly Ollie's staff, are fascinating. Hyzy's recipes are enticing. But, it's Ollie and the White House, along with the intrigue, that continue to bring readers back. With a new First Family, there's sure to be more changes, more danger and excitement. Thank heaven's Ollie's still able to take the heat, and the pressure. She's still the star, in the White House and the kitchen. And, Julie Hyzy's star shines brighter than ever with Buffalo West Wing.

A WRITER’S RESEARCH: KEEP THE BEST AND TOSS THE REST!
You might be surprised what writers do in the name of research. Karen Dionne (Boiling Point) visited a Chaiten volcano in the Northern Patagonia region of Chile. Kate Collins (The Flower Shop Mysteries) made a daunting trip to a local funeral parlor and even visited a crematorium. Julie Hyzy (The White House Chef Mysteries) enjoyed a wonderful visit to the White House to get a first hand feel for the place. Terri Brisbin (The Mercenary Bride) went to Dunottar Castle in Scotland and chatted with men in kilts (Tough work, but somebody had to do it.).
I have to admit, I’ve taken the easy way out. I decided to write the Talk Radio Mysteries for a very simple reason: it was familiar territory. Just like my heroine, Dr. Maggie Walsh, I’m a practicing clinical psychologist and I also have a background in broadcasting. Maggie closes up her Manhattan office to move to sunny Florida. I’m still in practice here in Delaware, but I do make an annual pilgrimage to Ft. Lauderdale. And I used to be a radio copywriter. No problem in describing the worlds of psychology and radio.

I made several pages of notes about Florida architecture, gorgeous scenery and exciting places. But only a few lines, here and there, made it into the finished book. Why? The secret is to use the most compelling detail, the most descriptive phrase to bring the magic of a place alive for the reader. Just like the title says, “keep the best and toss the rest.” Hope you enjoy Dr. Maggie’s adventures in paradise.
Thank you, Mary! And, don't forget readers should include their email address in the comments if you hope to win a copy of the latest book.

Winners and a Cozier Contest
Congratulations to the winners of the last couple contests. The Tami Hoag books will go to Caryn St. C. from St. Louis, MO. Mirror Image by Dennis Palumbo will be sent to Claudia W. of Klamath Falls, OR. And, Lois H. from Beverly Hills won Jilliane Hoffman's Pretty Little Things. I'll be mailing those last two books tomorrow, while the publicist will send out Tami Hoag's books.
This isn't the week to offer violent mysteries. Instead, I have two cozier mysteries as prizes. How about a mystery featuring "7 bedrooms, 4 baths, 2 ghosts." E.J. Copperman's Night of the Living Deed is the first in a new series. When newly divorced Alison Kerby bought a fixer-upper to turn into a guesthouse, she didn't count on dealing with two resident ghosts who claim their deaths were not suicide. If she doesn't want to become a ghost herself, Alison better find the killer.
Or, how about an autographed ARC of Scoop to Kill by Wendy Lyn Watson? Tally Jones, proprietor of an old-fashioned ice-cream parlor is shocked when the local colelge serves up "A double dip of death," bodies of a graduate student, and then a professor. The list of suspects is as long as the ice cream shop's menu, but Tally wants to find the killer before her niece becomes the next choice of the day.
So, which mystery would you like to win, Night of the Living Deed or Scoop to Kill? You can enter to win both, but I need separate entries. Email me at lholstine@yahoo.com. Your subject lines should read either, "Win Living Deed," or "Win Scoop to Kill." Include your name and mailing address. Entrants from the U.S. only please.
The contest will end Thursday night, Jan. 20 at 6 PM MT. I'll use a random number generator to pick the winners, and the books will go out in the mail on Friday. Good luck!

Buttercream Bump Off by Jenn McKinlay
And, congratulations added to Jenn. Buttercream Bump Off appears on the New York Times' extended bestseller list for mass market paperbacks for Jan. 23. Congrats, Jenn!
From the moment Melanie Cooper and her business partners, Angie DeLaura and Take Harper encountered a giant cupcake on the corner of Fifth and Scottsdale, Jenn McKinlay's second Cupcake Bakery mystery takes off on a funny journey that never quits. The cozy mystery, Buttercream Bump Off, is filled with laugh aloud moments in the course of a murder investigation.

McKinlay incorporates Valentine's Day and a number of romances and roadblocks to those romances. Poor Mel is dating Angie's brother, Joe, a hot lawyer, who falls asleep every time he shows up at her apartment since he's working long hours on a murder case. Tate doesn't recognize that Angie loves him, and she turns everything up-side-down by dating a rock star. Then, there's the elderly man who has taken to hanging out in the bakery, eating cupcakes to try to win the raffle. And, of course, there's poor Joyce, whose hot date led to hot tub death.
Between the bakery business, their own version of "cupcake wars" with a competing bakery, and romance, it's a wonder Mel and Angie have time to investigate a murder case. But, Mel isn't going to let her mother remain the number one suspect, even if it means sneaking around Scottsdale.
Jenn McKinlay's latest mystery is funny, creative, and filled with interesting characters. Add in those cupcake recipes, and Buttercream Bump Off is a recipe for success.

Happy Holidays & Happy Reading!
Bedeviled Eggs by Laura Childs

It's fall in Kindred, and the owners of the Cackleberry Club are preparing for quilting events, Halloween, and the local election. It was Suzanne Dietz' idea to open the café, after her husband died. Her friend, Petra, whose husband has Alzheimer's, is the chef, while Toni, in an off-again/on-again marriage, helps in the restaurant. Over time, they've built up a great reputation for their egg specialities. And, the business is flourishing, even in the bad economy, thanks to good food, and the addition of the Book Nook and Knitting Nest. But, Suzanne is always looking for added attractions, and a "read dating" event attracts a number of people who hope to date someone with similar reading tastes. But, Petra's friend, Jane, and mayoral candidate Chuck Peebler have an argument that disrupts the evening. When Suzanne walks Chuck out the back door, he's killed instantly by an arrow from a crossbow. As the killer continues to shoot, Suzanne drags her dog and herself back inside the Cackleberry Club.
Although Suzanne has been involved in murder investigations in the past, this time, it's Petra who begs her to help Jane, Sheriff Doogie's number one suspect. At least she's the number one suspect until Suzanne stumbles across another body while driving the historical society's Quilt Trail. Suzanne saw one murder, and found the second victim. And, she wants to help Sheriff Doogie, who might lose the election if he doesn't arrest a killer. When she's threatened a couple times, it doesn't scare her off. Now, it's personal. Suzanne is determined to help Doogie find that killer.
Childs' combination of well-written mystery, good friends, good food, a little humor, and, now, a little romance, makes for a holiday treat. And, it's a mystery with a pitch-perfect ending, dramatic and funny at the same time. It may be set in the fall, but don't hesitate to pick it up now. What cozy mystery fan can resist a book that includes great food on almost every page, a few recipes, and terrific characters? Laura Childs' Bedeviled Eggs offers a little of everything for those of us who appreciate cozy mysteries.

A Deadly Row by Casey Mayes

Savannah quit teaching math to create number and logic puzzles, a job she loves. And, she and Zach retired to a nice little place in the mountains of North Carolina. But, Zach wasn't as ready as Savannah to settle in. He was forced to retire from his job as police chief of Charlotte, after he was shot in the line of duty, and unable to work. He's too young to sit at home so he frequently takes jobs as a consultant when police departments need help. The chance to return to Charlotte and help in a murder investigation might have sounded interesting, but two people were killed, and it looks as if the mayor, the man who introduced Savannah and Jack, is the next target. But, when the police department hired Zach, they didn't know Savannah's skills would be just as useful.
This first mystery has everything going for it. Savannah and Zach Stone are an attractive couple who work well together as sleuths. It's not far-fetched to have a professional in Zach, accompanied by his wife when he's on a consulting job. At the moment, the series is set in North Carolina, but the job of consultant presents great opportunities for cases in other locations. And, the side story about Savannah's family was an extra treat.
I hope A Deadly Row marks the start of a series that will flourish, allowing Savannah and Zach to take consulting jobs for years.

Murder at the PTA by Laura Alden

Beth Kennedy has only been divorced a year, and she thought she had enough on her plate with her two children, Jenna and Oliver, and the children's bookstore she owns, Children's Bookshelf. But, Beth's best friend, Marina, had other thoughts. Before she knows it, Beth is the new secretary of the PTA at Tarver Elementary School. And, her very first meeting ends in chaos when the controversial school principal, Agnes Mephisto, announces her plans for an ugly addition to the school. The meeting grows contentious when everyone realizes Agnes doesn't need permission to build, since the money is coming from an anonymous donor.
After stirring up angry feelings all over town, Agnes is found murdered in her home. Beth feels bad, but has no intention of investigating until Marina is threatened. It seems Marina has been up to some mischief, and there's an angry killer out there. And, Beth Kennedy is almost as protective of her best friend as she is of her children.
Welcome to Beth Kennedy's world. It's a world that revolves around her children, her bookstore, and, now, a murder. Alden has created an interesting community, and peppered it with entertaining characters. And, she's given us Beth Kennedy, whose primary concern is for her children. She's a woman who will overcome her fears to ensure her children are safe and secure. Let's hope Murder at the PTA is only the first of many mysteries for Beth Kennedy.

Pepperoni Pizza Can Be Murder by Chris Cavender
I like cozy mysteries, but the most satisfying ones are ones in which the amateur sleuth has a good reason for investigating a murder. In other words, how many times can the owner of a cookie or candy shop actually have a reason to push their way into an ongoing case? Chris Cavender's Pepperoni Pizza Can Be Murder offers a legitimate reason for pizzeria owner Eleanor Swift to take action.
Acting as narrator, Eleanor clues the reader in quickly. A dead body was found in the kitchen of her pizzeria, A Slice of Delight, with a thin crust pepperoni pizza and a bloody rolling pin. And, since it was her delivery man who was the primary suspect, Eleanor and her sister, Maddy, had a reason to look for a killer. If Eleanor can't be stopped when she's the victim of an armed robbery, why would Kevin Hurley, the police chief in Timber Ridge, North Carolina, think she can be stopped in a murder investigation? This murder hit too close to home for Eleanor to be intimidated.
Once again, readers will find themselves rooting for the two feisty sisters in the sequel to A Slice of Murder. Cavender gives us a likable cast of characters, humor, a killer that isn't the obvious suspect, and two great leading ladies. Pepperoni Pizza Can Be Murder has every element a discriminating cozy mystery reader could want.

The Long Quiche Goodbye by Avery Aames

Charlotte Bessette and her cousin, Matthew, are ready for the grand reopening of the cheese shop they took over from their grandfather. They've expanded, adding a wine shop with Matthew as sommelier, and the opening should be a treat for everyone. Business is booming in Amish Country. Unfortunately, Ed Woodhouse, the biggest real estate tycoon in town is threatening to sell the Cheese Shop property, and Charlotte's grandmother, Grandmère Bernadette is in a heated mayoral campaign against his wife. The night of the opening, Woodhouse makes passes at too many women in the shop, and his wife makes a scene, but everything calms down. Just as Charlotte is enjoying a little flirtation with a mysterious supplier of artisan cheese, a scream indicates trouble. And, Charlotte finds that trouble, her Grandmère standing over a victim killed with a knife from the shop.
No one wants to believe the town's mayor, a seventy-two-year-old exotic French immigrant, is a killer, but the police chief is forced to place her under house arrest. As her grandparents wither under the strain, Charlotte's friends recruit her to find the real killer.
Hopefully, The Long Quiche Goodbye marks the start of a successful, long-running series. Aames' characters are enjoyable, and Charlotte stands out from other amateur sleuths as an interesting, determined woman. It's going to be fun to watch the changes in Charlotte and her employee, Rebecca Zook. Rebecca, who left the Amish life, has a fondness for all TV crime shows, and bases her ideas about the case on episodes from TV. And, the mouth-watering discussion of cheeses adds so much to the pleasure of reading this book. I can't say enough about Fromagerie Bessette, The Cheese Shop. Aames has created a shop that leaps off the page, a warm, enticing place that invites customers and readers alike. It's the perfect setting for the launch of an enjoyable new series.
And, if you'd like a chance to win a copy of The Long Quiche Goodbye, check back on Thursday night when I'll start a contest. Avery Aames' will be giving away two autographed copies of the book.

CHARACTERS WELCOME!
By Avery Aames
You know what’s fun? Populating a book with characters. For A Cheese Shop Mystery series, I’ve created an entire town of people, characters who have dwelt in the quaint town of Providence, Ohio for years. You know what’s even more fun? When a character is cast in a cameo role and turns out to become a major player.
When I began writing The Long Quiche Goodbye, I started out with a set of main characters that included my protagonist Charlotte who ran The Cheese Shop, her cousin Matthew who ran the wine annex, her grandparents Grandmère and Pépère who raised her, and a best friend from childhood, Meredith. Charlotte also had an assistant in the shop, Amelia Wagler, who was a sweet Amish girl who left the community. Along the way, I realized that Amelia was too close a name to Amy, one of Charlotte’s twin nieces, so I changed Amelia’s name to one that was a more typical Amish name, Rebecca Zook, and wham! The character took off. Rebecca started waving her fictional hands at me and begging to be “all she could be.” She loved TV mystery shows. She was a snoop. She repeatedly had important information to impart. Without warning, she started chatting more in conversations. [Okay, yes, I probably had the ability to rein her in, but why? That would ruin the fun.] And so she evolved into Charlotte’s sidekick. Understand, Meredith was supposed to be Charlotte’s sidekick, but Meredith turned into someone who had more pressing life issues than pal-ing around with Charlotte. Rebecca, on the other hand, was always there, chiming in. [In book two, Lost and Fondue, she is just as vital. And Meredith gets a bigger role.]
Another character that took off in The Long Quiche Goodbye was Grandmère. What a delight she was to write! She is the local mayor and runs the local theater that earns rave reviews in the region. When she first appeared on the page, she had such energy. She reminded me (and therefore Charlotte) of “the little engine that could.” She charged onto the scene with the colorful verve of a gypsy. Years ago, she and Pépère left war-torn France and made America their home, and the couple embraced all things American. Grandmère raised Charlotte with love and affection and a gentle hand, but she is a director, and an organizer, and she wants to make sure her opinion is heard. Rein her in? Not on a bet!
Charlotte’s twin nieces, Amy and Claire, have also blossomed into full characters. Amy is night to Claire’s day. She’s a spitfire like her grandmother, nosy like Rebecca, and very dramatic, while Claire is more reserved, a reader, an observer. Charlotte adores them both.
And then there’s Charlotte’s pal, Delilah, an ex-hoofer from Broadway who has returned to town to run the Country Kitchen diner. And Lois, the quirky gal who adores the color purple and operates the Lavender and Lace bed-and-breakfast. And Umberto Urso, the chief of police, a big bear of a man who Charlotte thought was destined to become president of the United States but chose to keep the peace in his hometown.
The list goes on, but I don’t want to forget to mention
Jordan Pace, the handsome cheese farmer who has won Charlotte’s heart. Not only does he help smaller farms age their cheeses properly in the affinage caves that he built, but he makes a delicious Double-cream Gouda. What a guy! However, Jordan has a mysterious past that makes Charlotte a little wary. She wishes she knew more about him. She’s not the kind of person who takes risks. At least she isn’t until a murder happens in town and her grandmother is suspected of the crime. Then Charlotte finds out that she has spirit. Lots of spirit!
Ah, yes, the joy of being an author. I love it.
Do you people watch? Do you divine stories about people you see? ? Do your characters have a past, a future? Do those stories morph? Isn’t it fun?!!!
Thank you, Avery! I hope you'll check out Avery's book if you love cozy mysteries or cheese. And, I'm sure you don't have to love cheese to read the book. I'm originally from Ohio, and I'm partial to books set there. I'll be reviewing The Long Quiche Goodbye tomorrow.

Sunday Salon - Delicious and Suspicious by Riley Adams
Is there a better day to review a Memphis BBQ Mystery
than the 4th of July? Riley Adams' debut book in the series, Delicious and Suspicious, is so enticing I'm ready to pack my bags for Memphis, stay at the Peabody, visit Graceland, and eat barbeque on Beale Street, while listening to the blues. Adams packed all of Memphis into one cozy mystery, with a fun cast of characters.
Lulu Taylor inherited Aunt Pat's, famous for its barbeque, and made it into a family affair. One son, Ben, works the kitchen. His wife, Sara, waits tables, and Lulu has moved from the kitchen to welcoming guests, and chatting up the regulars. When her youngest son, Seb, moved home from New York, she put him to work in the office. So, she couldn't be any prouder to show off the restaurant to Rebecca Adrian, a scout for the Cooking Channel. Rebecca showed a skill no one expected though. She was very good at blowing up dreams. She turned her back on the Graces, a group of docents from Graceland; and humiliated almost everyone she came in contact in the short time she was in Memphis. Is it any wonder she ended up dead?
It's hard for Lulu to work up any sympathy for the dead woman. But, when everyone associated with Aunt Pat's seems to have a motive for killing Rebecca, it's time for Lulu to turn on the charm. It's quite possible that a family member or friend killed the scout, and Lulu's determined to force their hand. Lulu has a gift for schmoozing, and she'll worm the truth out of all the suspects, even if it takes extra barbeque and sweet tea.
Riley Adams packs Delicious and Suspicious with an entertaining cast of characters, beginning with Lulu and her family, including her intrepid granddaughter, Ella Beth. There are the women who make up the Graces. My favorites are the enchanting trio of retired blues musicians who make Aunt Pat's their second home. And, Lulu Taylor is my favorite kind of amateur sleuth, one who turns people over to the police, and is a talented conversationalist. Lulu's method of investigation consists of little chats with everyone to find out what they were doing when the victim died.
I'd recommend an armchair visit to Memphis. Check out Aunt Pat's, visit with Lulu Taylor, enjoy some barbeque with your mystery selection. I'd give anything for some sweet tea to enjoy with Riley Adams' Delicious and Suspicious.
